How long does CPR / BLS certification last and how often is it renewed?
Course duration, certification validity and why refresher training every two years makes a difference.
What CPR and BLS certification is
CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) is the set of actions we take when someone has suffered cardiac arrest: chest compressions, rescue breaths and use of a defibrillator. The term BLS (Basic Life Support) describes essentially the same set of skills, together with choking management and the recovery position.
A CPR or BLS certification confirms that you attended a structured programme from a recognised provider and showed in practice that you can perform the techniques correctly. At Life on Line Academy certification is issued through the international organisation Emergency First Response (EFR).
How long the course takes
A core CPR and defibrillator course usually lasts a few hours. At Life on Line Academy the programme lasts about 3 hours, most of it hands-on practice on manikins. The refresher programme is shorter, about 2 hours.
The duration can be adapted for groups or businesses, depending on the number of participants and their needs — for example, if you would like scenarios specific to your workplace.
How long certification is valid
Most international training bodies, including EFR, recommend refresher training roughly every two years. This is not a bureaucratic detail: research shows that practical CPR skills — rate, compression depth, order of steps — decline noticeably within a few months if they are not practised.
In addition, international resuscitation guidelines are reviewed periodically. Refresher training ensures you follow the current recommendations.
If your job requires active certification, check exactly what your employer or organisation asks for, as some set their own time limits.
Signs you need a refresher
Even if two years have not passed, it is worth considering a refresher if:
- You are not sure of the rate or depth of compressions
- You have never used a training defibrillator
- You have changed job or role with more responsibility for others
- You have had a child or care for an older person
- You want to feel confident again
How renewal works
Certification renewal is a short, practical programme. We go back over the key steps, you practise on a manikin with feedback, use a training defibrillator and are updated on any changes to the guidelines. On completion your certification is renewed.
For businesses, a regular refresher programme every two years helps ensure trained staff are always present in the workplace.
