Is first aid training mandatory for businesses?

What changes under Law 5239/2025 for CPR and the Heimlich manoeuvre in the workplace.

The new provision of Law 5239/2025

Article 39 of Greek Law 5239/2025 introduces a provision for training employees in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the Heimlich manoeuvre. The aim is simple: every workplace should have people who can respond to cardiac arrest or choking until the ambulance (EKAB) arrives.

The provision distinguishes between facilities according to the number of employees. An important detail is that the threshold applies to the facility — that is, the specific workplace — and not to the company as a whole.

Facilities with up to 50 employees

For smaller facilities, training can be based on material provided by the competent Ministry. Many businesses, however, choose to supplement the material with in-person practical training, because CPR is a skill learned mainly with your hands — theory alone is rarely enough under pressure.

Facilities with more than 50 employees

For larger facilities, training is delivered through courses by certified first aid training providers, to half of the facility's employees, at least every three years.

This means that a business with 80 employees at one facility must ensure that at least 40 of them have been trained, and that training is repeated at least every three years.

Why it is worth it beyond the obligation

Regardless of the legal obligation, staff training has practical benefits:

  • Faster response to cardiac arrest, choking or injury
  • A greater sense of safety for employees and customers
  • A stronger safety culture in the workplace
  • Team bonding through a meaningful shared experience

How training is organised

Life on Line Academy delivers in-person courses at your business premises, with manikins and a training defibrillator. The programme is adapted to the number of people and your team's schedule, and certification is available depending on the programme chosen.
